Suicide! Not all that many years ago my own family suffered the tragic loss of suicide. it’s a milestone of time one never forgets. For many years my response to others on this subject has been “the most selfish act anyone can do to others”. In our family it was the loss of my mothers husband and my stepfather. Today we hear of the tragic loss of the young man; Junior Seau. I remember watching the movie, What Dreams May Come and came to realize we can’t know the inner pain these people are suffering? I will never know really what pain my stepfather was living anymore that the Seau family can imagine what Junior was going through. My views have changed over the years about suicide. I don’t really think it’s something anyone wants to do and cause so much pain in all those around them, it’s only no other options are available and the pain is just to intense. We have no magic pill, no man made solution? I like to think that faith in a greater power would be enough and for some perhaps it is. So today rest in peace Mr. Seau, I for one hope you have found it. To the Seau family, if you believe as I do then you will know that he has just gone home to a safer place.

Craig…Thank you for this post. Suicide is probably one of the worst forms of death that we can experience because so many questions are left to the imagination. I am growing more and more concerned with the sheer # of people who are suffering from traumatic brain injuries. Junior is just one of many who play a violent game in which their head is a weapon of sorts. We are seeing countless soldiers who have similiar trama from explosions on the battlefireld. I believe that Junior wants to have his brain studied hence the shot to the chest. *My guess. Depression is caused by these types of injuries. My hope is that more research can be done on the long and short term effects of concussions and that the NFL will take a much closer look. This is the 5th known suicide of an ex NFL player in as many years.
While football is “America’s favorite past time” and definitely lucrative for most of the players, owners, etc. it is an increasingly violent sport. Reference the Saints suspensions for placing bounties on other players, i.e. if the player the bounty was set on was hit hard enough to be taken out of the game the bounty amount increased. The sad part of this is some of these injuries can be career ending. The increase in concussions the past few years is a testament to how violent the game has become. I’m sad for the families and friends who are left to “make sense” of the suicide. I also sad for the person who chooses suicide. May all involved find peace and hope in such a difficult time.
