FollowCraig: Green Demons! “the next day”

……and you’re still reading

Remember my Green Demons? In short, this is how the following day unfolded. God truly let me sleep and I awoke feeling so rested. So much different from the day before, it was nice. I was still frightened as everything in my life was screwed up! I found myself in my kitchen reading a phone book that seemed to just open to the Alcoholic‘s Anonymous phone number. I really was not looking for that number, it just appeared! So I called, they were nice and gave me an address of a meeting happening that day. After some him-hawing around I got dressed up (shirt & tie) and drove to the noon meeting. The meeting place was at an old run down dive bar on Sahara Blvd in Las Vegas. There were a bunch of motorcycles outside and what looked to me some real lost souls. I will never forget walking in only to see all these people drinking coffee, smoking, talking, playing games and such. Not at all the kind of place I would ever hang out at. What was this place? I’m in a suit and all these people look like biker people. Did I come to the right place? I was shocked to say the least, but I stayed. About noon people began to move thru an open door leading to a room filled with several tables and chairs. A lot of people all taking seats so I finally sat down in the middle of the room. The door closed and the meeting opened. I don’t remember much about the meeting, but I wondered about the list of 12 Steps posted on the wall. People began to introduce themselves and when my turn came, I quietly said I’m Craig and this is my first visit. I was so nervous and no one looked like anyone I would want to visit with. However something kept me sitting there, listening and crying inside. I thought to myself “has life had turned to this, was I one of these low life’s“. When the meeting ended and we were moving out to the common social area a fellow came up to me and just asked if I would like to have a cup of coffee with him? Sure I said, why not? It’s funny now but I don’t remember his name and I have never seen him again. We talked for what seemed like hours, I just opened up and he listened, I cried and he gave me towels for my tears. He never judged me, he just welcomed me. I didn’t feel alone anymore, it was as if some small voice was telling me I would be; OK. As we spoke another fellow stopped by and introduced himself, his name was Bob D. Now he must be the head A.A. person I thought as he was dressed very well, looked like Kenny Rogers and walked with confidence. A very charismatic man, my kind of guy! He gave me his phone number and invited me to a “Speaker Night” the following day. He said I should come, but if not at least call him. I said; OK Bob! When the afternoon was over my head was spinning. What is this A.A.? What about those 12 Steps posted on the wall? Little did I know the path my life would take, the journey to unfold ahead of me?

FollowCraig: Banks & Bedrooms?

…….and you’re still reading

So it’s almost time to elect our next President and the Wall Street gang is making a killing! Watching the daily news and all the various self-appointed financial and political analysts bring such unrest within me. I can’t help but wonder how some financial groups like Bank of America, JP Morgan and so many others can play monopoly with our citizens money? While some political groups care so much more about our bedrooms? We have those who profess to be Democrats, some Republicans, some Independents and don’t forget the Tea Party! Oh, and I love this one: “We are a Christian Nation“. Sometimes our Great Country just seems nuts! Whatever happened to; We the People? How is it that our leaders, our congress and our courts have forgotten what our nation is about? Our government was created by “We the People” to establish rules and guidelines to be equally fair to all people. To protect us; yes each of us from injustice and harm. To be one nation providing domestic tranquility and to promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to our people. Today in our political climate there are those who are much more interested in our privacy, the life we live in our own bedrooms than the protection of our people. How has this happened? Have we become so complacent, so wrapped up in our daily lives that we just don’t pay attention and just go on with our lives as if all is well? My parents and those I grew up with said; “never talk politics or religion”! I say today why not? This year when we vote and I do scream “Go Vote”, let’s really listen to what these candidates say and what they stand for. Ask this question. Do they stand with; We the People or Bankers & Bedrooms?

FollowCraig: Garage Sale

…….and you’re still reading

It’s Saturday morning and today is,Garage Sale Day!” That’s a big day here in Glen Cove, California. You see, we have over 3000 people in our community and once a year our residents sign up to have their address posted on a map pointing to theirs and all the Garage Sales happening today in Glen Cove. It’s so very cool, people are emptying the garage, neighbors are talking and others are buying. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and today no truer statement could be said. It reminds me of the times in my life as a career salesman, when I could not sell enough cars to pay the bills, I would sell the bicycles, the lamps, the furniture and more. My life seemed a constant Garage Sale. My final Garage Sale came and went about 9 years ago and I didn’t get a single dollar. That’s the day and time I cleaned the crap up inside of myself and started anew. Just like Glen Cove every year I stop, clean up the stuff that’s gathered in my life and get rid of it! I guess that’s why this annual event here is so intriguing, it’s not random but rather focused. I Like that!

FollowCraig: “I’ve Evolved”

…..and you’re still reading

Just the other day, President Obama stated he has evolved regarding his position of same-sex marriage. That has made the news big time! Historical it’s called, a sitting President taking this position at such a crucial time in politics and our nation. Was he brave, was he bold? I don’t really know and whether you are in agreement with his statement is not really the point. We all evolve overtime, as we grow older and our experiences build the foundations of our lives. In my own life I have evolved from a non-spiritual point of view to a very strong faith-based point of view. I’ve evolved to be more responsible, to be a better father, a better husband, a better son and perhaps a better man. You see as the world moves and we become more engaged in its importance, we become less involved in ours. We evolve! I commend Mr. Obama for taking a stand, but mostly that he was willing to and continues to evolve. Maybe we should all work a little each day in our lives to explore, learn, engage and continue to evolve.

FollowCraig: “My Mom”

……and you’re still reading

She stood there, so quiet, tears running down her face holding in her anger, hurt and fear. I will never forget that picture in my mind and heart. You see, I was eighteen years old and was at that moment embroiled in a very heated fight with my stepfather. This was a rather horrific way to leave home, screaming, fighting, then climbing out of my bedroom window to escape! My mother was so broken, she really did not know what to do? There was nothing she could do. Her oldest son did not move out like so many to a new and exciting life but rather was running for his life. My mother had four boys, we are all grown today and each of us have our memories of life at home. Our mother is a wonderful and very caring women and I Love her very much. Today as I look back over all these years and reflect on all the times my Mom was so quiet, not really speaking out and seemed to just accept her place in life. Her husband didn’t respect her, her boys depended on her for everything, she worked so hard and still smiled when inside she was just beaten down. It is often said “the acorn does not fall far from the tree” and so that is with me. I’m much like my mother. Perhaps that’s why I understand her so? As you follow my journey and lessons learned, this is one of so many. We only have one mother in our lives, we don’t get a second chance nor can we choose another. They are there for us always, even when it seems they’re not. To the men who read this I say; love and respect your mothers as they suffer through a lot of pain and sacrifice for us. Today as the rerun of that day plays over in my mind, I know it was my mother who made it possible to survive and work past all the trials that were to come in my life. Yes, my mother was really the brave one! For me, everyday is Mother’s Day!

FollowCraig: Plastic Plants

……..and you’re still reading

Imagine being a teenager pushing a lawnmower as part of your weekly chores? Every week your dad reminds you; Craig “Cut The Grass”! We had rental houses as well so the grass cutting just seemed to never end. I swore that when I got older my house would have plastic plants and artificial grass, never to do this again. Today I’m 60 years old and just finished watering my freshly planted grass and flowers. What happened? So goes life, we get all wrapped up in our daily chores of work, paying the bills, raising children and dreaming of vacations. My life began to move really fast in my late 20’s and early 30’s. I was working all the time, first in the insurance business and later managing automobile dealerships. My ego was so very large back then, you should have seen me. Fancy clothes, gold jewelery, fast cars and big bar tabs. I remember buying a gold watch made from a 20 dollar solid gold coin, I was nuts! Craig was living a plastic life and yes I had plenty of Plastic Plants. Interesting thing about plastic plants and plastic lives, they start to get dusty and often begin to fade. Those little branches just start to drop off much like the plastic life. The family, fades, falls apart and nothing is shiny anymore. One day you wake up and nothing is real and the craving for something different begins to stir. You begin to search and travel some very risky trails. Life on a tightrope without proper balance, so close to falling, so close to hitting the bottom and never getting up. Then it hits you, plastic plants don’t last because they never needed water. Like life if you’re not needed and you don’t love your plastic world just dies. It took some time for me, it didn’t come easy but I found it; that little secret that had eluded me for so many years. Life and plants need watering. Gold watches, fancy cloths and fast cars speed away. Today I’m not a fake, I have faith, I love and am loved. I don’t have a single plastic plant, and every plant in my life gets a healthy dose of water and love. Now that’s the life!

FollowCraig: What color are your Grandchildren?

……and you’re still reading

Let’s be clear on this, I was born a white guy, into a Mormon family located in California. I didn’t have any control of over who my family would be? What a surprise, I am just like everyone else. Not one of us can pick our family, where and what religion or not we are born. For those of us lucky enough to live here in the USA; “the melting pot of the world” we are hopefully raised to be accepting of our differences and celebrate the common ribbons that tie our lives together. So why is it we have so much racism and fear of those who look, talk or worship different from us? I think it’s fear of the uncertain. As a Christian man, it fascinates me that so many people forget we are all God‘s children. We come in all colors, cultures and faiths. I heard a story the other day of two older German Lutherans who have lived in Los Angeles all their adult live. Over time the neighborhood has evolved and is mostly populated with people of Hispanic heritage. When they go to church they see so many people who are not white Germans, they wonder what color their grandchildren will be? They are afraid their own legacy won’t survive. Why do we forget that our color and heritage does not matter to God? We cannot change the family we were born to, nor the place we were born. We can however choose our beliefs and faith. So, what color are your grandchildren to be? I know the color of mine are love.

FollowCraig: “Junior Seau”

…..and your still reading

Suicide! Not all that many years ago my own family suffered the tragic loss of suicide. it’s a milestone of time one never forgets. For many years my response to others on this subject has been “the most selfish act anyone can do to others”. In our family it was the loss of my mothers husband and my stepfather. Today we hear of the tragic loss of the young man; Junior Seau. I remember watching the movie, What Dreams May Come and came to realize we can’t know the inner pain these people are suffering? I will never know really what pain my stepfather was living anymore that the Seau family can imagine what Junior was going through. My views have changed over the years about suicide. I don’t really think it’s something anyone wants to do and cause so much pain in all those around them, it’s only no other options are available and the pain is just to intense. We have no magic pill, no man made solution? I like to think that faith in a greater power would be enough and for some perhaps it is. So today rest in peace Mr. Seau, I for one hope you have found it. To the Seau family, if you believe as I do then you will know that he has just gone home to a safer place.
